Another Life
We sat together
In silence
Like an old
Married couple
With nothing
Left to say.
We sat together
In silence
But I could
Feel her heat
Smell her humanity
Beneath her perfume.
She had beautiful feet
Perhaps she had been
A dancer once
When she was young.
I could have
Asked her
But with
The false wisdom
Of old age
I didn’t.
I fell asleep.
She woke me
Concerned
I would miss
My flight,
Which was
Her flight,
But she was
Going west
And I east
A few hours later.
And so it passed
The opportunity
For another life.
In silence
Like an old
Married couple
With nothing
Left to say.
We sat together
In silence
But I could
Feel her heat
Smell her humanity
Beneath her perfume.
She had beautiful feet
Perhaps she had been
A dancer once
When she was young.
I could have
Asked her
But with
The false wisdom
Of old age
I didn’t.
I fell asleep.
She woke me
Concerned
I would miss
My flight,
Which was
Her flight,
But she was
Going west
And I east
A few hours later.
And so it passed
The opportunity
For another life.
