OH WOE OF POE

Oh woe of Poe, my tortured soul
Romance’s son, death’s friend

Forevermore doomed to suffer
Enslaved in the castle of lonely

Since my precious Eliza Clemm
Eloped with Azrael to Heaven

Within these blood soaked walls I anguish
Prisoner of this city in the sea

My love, oh sweet beautiful Helen
Who now ignores my passion

Why oh why can’t love find me?
Doesn’t she hear me softly weep?

Oh gossamer winged Israfel
I beg, come play your lute for me

Let your angelic music free me
From lost love’s depressing memories

That are so tormenting me
So I can sleep the sweet sleep

Oh woe of Poe, my bed’s lonely and cold
Israfel, lure me a love to hold

Author's Note
Notes;
Azrael, is often considered to be the Christian angel of death.
Sarah Helen Whitman, better known as ‘Helen, was a poetess who was considered one of the last of Poe’s tragic loves. Though she wrote Valentine’s poems to Edgar she couldn’t deal with his on and off drinking binges.  As a consequence she broke off the relationship. Many historians theorize, the loss of Helen’s love caused him to go such a drinking binge, that he basically committed suicide by the bottle.
Israfel, is the name of an Islamic angel who is known for singing with a beautiful voice in a thousand languages. He was often mentioned in Poe’s works. 'Woe of Poe,' is also inspired in part by ‘Poe’s Castle of Blood’ and his ‘City by the Sea.’  My entry for the 'Raven competition.'
