Savannah

We rolled into Savannah shortly before midnight
I had been there before, but that was almost 30 years ago
I had virtually no memory of this river side city
With its many town squares
Shaded by live oaks bearded with Spanish moss
This time I planned to remember Savannah
We went to Factors Walk and strolled the river front
I could see South Carolina across on the other shore
We walked the historic district past the old buildings
And beautiful houses and the horse drawn carriage tours
To the marketplace and the restaurants where we watched
The paddlewheel, the tugboats, and the container ships go by
We toured houses and saw museums, looked at statues
And read plaques and inscriptions
I bought a book of poetry from a little shop
All in all our time there was lovely
However, Savannah I think is a nice place to visit,
But I wouldn’t want to live there
Though, if I were to die in Savannah
Go ahead and burry me there
In beautiful Bonaventure Cemetery,
But on the old side, not on the new
