I Take Your Hand

Now we meet on a playground
You have fallen from the swing
I take your hand into mine
You cry
And we learn each other’s face

Now we sit under an oak
We share our secret hopes and fears
I take your hand into mine
You smile
And we know we have forever

Now we stand at the alter
We pledge ourselves to each other
I take your hand into mine
You cry
And we kiss each other anew

Now we lie in our bed
Our bodies spent from love’s embrace
I take your hand into mine
You smile
And we share the same dreams

Now we are in a hospital
Anxiety gnawing at us both
I take your hand into mine
You cry
And we witness a life begin

Now we watch them learn and grow
With pain and joy all at once
I take your hand into mine
You smile
And we know we did our best

Now I stand at your bedside
Time has taken what time is owed
I take your hand into mine
I cry
And we have no more words to speak

Now we dance together again
Our bodies know no toil or want
I take your hand into mine
You smile
And now we have forever
