On Poetic Forms, Nr.04 (Triolets: Theory and Practice)
TRIOLETS - THE THEORY
1.(A) The first repeats twice more again
2.(B) the next once more for sure you’ll see
3.(a) so have a go, pick up a pen
4.(A) the first repeats once more again
5.(a) just choose a scansion, cool and zen
6.(b) and stick to it so flow is free -
7.(A) the first repeats last time again
8.(B) the next, no more for sure - you see.
TRIOLETS - THE PRACTICE
Keys On Mars
Was searching for my bloody keys
they might as well have been on Mars
the quest destroyed my zen-like ease
while searching for my bloody keys
I even pleaded God “Oh please …”
forgot I’d dropped them in a vase.
Was searching for my bloody keys
they might as well have been on Mars.

Author's Note
Number 4 in a series on Poetic Forms, including both Theory and Practice. The first poem uses the form itself to explain the 'Theory' of the form. The second poem uses the form as a random 'Practice' example. (On Poetic Forms 1, 2 & 3, covered Quaterns, Limericks and Free Verse).

I enjoy triolets! This one is no exception! Josh, you should think about hosting a monthly comp on poetic form! This would allow ample time for those nervous about delving into them to practice before submitting.
Between our classics and your forms, DUP would see a new horizon! Plus serious writers enjoy the challenge. It pushes them out of their box.
Well done!

You're way ahead of the game, Ahavati. I've been thinking about comps giving opportunity for anyone to 'have a go' at various poetic forms. There are so many interesting delights to discover - and they keep one's neural network challenged to make new connections and routes to higher horizons (posh way of saying mental challenges help prevent one going senile). :))

Would love to see that comp ... Be sure to include Anglo saxon alliterative rhyme as one of your forms - you never know, Deor himself may enter it ...

You make these different styles seem so easy. I think I would get a brain ache if I tried them. Still...I'm enjoying the tour. :-)

Glad you are enjoying the tour, Willow. There's more to come in the series, (I hope).

keep up the good work, Josh ... very useful for DUP ...
Oh, and I also enjoyed the poem. I stick mine in a wooden bowl on the sideboard (I wonder if they have those in the USA?).

Thank you AB; mine actually go in the muckle-puckle drawer (not sure if they have those in the USA either) so I was playing fast and loose with a bit of poetic license. :))

Thank you for the compliment, Hunterpsych - Maybe Rondels & Rondeaus are to follow; we'll see.

You amaze me, Josh. You have mastered these various poetic forms and supplied an education to those who should take heed, like me. I don't have the discipline, not so far. I'm too stuck in my own schemes. Fine work!

Your very generous in your assessment, Crow, by saying I have 'mastered' the form. More like having a stab at it. However, this form tends to lend itself to light-weight "ditty' style poetry, which I have possibly an advantage of growing up with a mother who was always quoting such things.

I tend to be lavish in my praise. I admire your experimentation even if you're not a master of the form. I still regard this as an effective stab at triolets. I can't even imagine myself having a similar and informative success.

Re: Re. On Triolets (theory & practice)
Good question; answer no. The ones that rhyme the same should (as I understand it) be the same number of syllables. So for example, lines 1, 3, 4, 5 & 7 might be 10 syllables; and lines 2, 6 & 8 could be 8 syllables.
