Just Underneath My Skin

Just underneath my skin
There are a million snarling monsters
All rumbling to get out
Look right, you’ll see an angry eye
Look left, you’ll see a snout

It used to be so shiny there…
With mostly blood beneath my skin
It used to take a microscope
To see those tiny beasts within

But as I grew, my monsters did too.
Every slander cut and loss
Adding to the mass.
My skin stopped being skin.
Now it’s camouflage.
