dawn

in the surreptitious dawn
a hummingbird beats his wings
against still air
holding himself aloft long enough
to jut his elongated tongue
into the deep belly of every flower
offering him sweet sustenance

drunk with the sugary concoction
he hovers
beating wings,
softly buzzing
swings to and fro

before darting away
a beautiful flash
of emerald green,
he is gone
on a quest
for purest ambrosia
