Narcissistic

he stood before the mirror
flexing his muscles,
turning this way and that
smiling at himself
you sure look fine
oh yes you do,
combing his hair back
checking his pearly whites
putting on his aftershave
cause a mans gotta smell nice,
slipping into his clothes
the whole time checking
himself out
smoothing out his button
down shirt
tucking it into his pants just so
button and zip,
black belt smooth,
suit coat fitted to show off
broad shoulders
and trim fit

(she watches with abject curiosity
even she doesn't take this long
to get ready)

he's gotta look smart, sharp,
ready for anything,
anyone,
he's all business
and he loves that,
the business,
of getting ready
looking good
its the only thing that
matters to him,
she waits for him to be done,

Wish I could take you with me,
he lies,
but this is just for the business people
don't know what time I'll be home
so don't wait up,
I look pretty damn good though,
don't you think?
he even strikes a pose,
finally taking a moment
to glance in her direction

she looks up at him and just smiles,


he is so caught up
in himself
he never
sees the way she rolls her eyes,
or the growing hostility,
that she only smiles when he
finally glances in her direction,

he's gone for days,
tells her he met some woman
In a bar,  how they chatted
drank too much
he walked her to her room,
how he kissed her goodnight,
but it meant nothing

she loses it,
this from a man who
barely gave her room to breathe,
he throws his hands at her face,
yelling that if this is how she's going to be
he won't tell her anything

at that moment
she plotted her leaving
Or killing,
whichever came first
