A Gentleman
is not made of riches
or material possessions
strong or perfect physique;
he's trustworthy and loyal
dedicated and dependable
honest and direct
doesn't mean he can't make mistakes
but, accepts responsibility for choices
confesses them openly, never blames
A Gentleman does not play victim
during dire circumstances
befalling his existence:
he maturely adapts--
accepts that which
he cannot change;
faces challenges
with moral dignity
and steadfast integrity;
suffers not guilt
to enter stage left
or pity to play protagonist
A Gentleman
never forces his will
on anyone else;
but, honors wishes
with graceful respect
Acting contrary
to another's request
is pure ego asserting itself--
just because it can
or claims to know what's best
for another able-bodied adult
A Gentleman honors
his fellow wo/man, knows
discretion is the better part of valor;
refuses to disclose intimacy
as a means to sully character
A Gentleman is
as a Gentleman does:
Lives and lets Live
despite personal wants

Awwwww ❤💕 I am more gentleman than scholar for sure.
This should be required reading in grade school when most life long behaviors of boys ( and girls ) are established.
When it comes treating others, a man should be gentle, not a bull in a fine china shop who only thinks of himself.
I am fortunate to be in the company of nothing less than a Lady who is patient enough to help refine my rough edges.
I Love You. 💜😙😊

I am glad I am a gentleman, such beasts some men are especially those who court favours from unlikely sources to hold on to perceived power self allocated by their own ego rather than having a correct view of their own IQ i have to say I agree with the sentiments here I would be interested to see how you would tackle a poem called "The Lady"

"A Gentleman is
as a Gentleman does:"
... wearing one's heart on one's sleeve - and taking the rap when people don't like it.
Nice checklist :))

Ahavati, you are absolutely correct. A Gentleman never kisses and tells, even when the gossip mongers prod him with questions. ❤📝

Questions, questions indeed. Discretion is the better part of valor, Dr. Lector. Only a gentleman recognizes such.
Thank you for the visit and RL.

I really like this. So much bad behaviour goes on nowadays. Where is honor and respect...we need more gentlemen.

Totally agree with these sentiments. I think all men (myself definitely included) sometimes need to take a step back, push aside their machismo personal desires & view things objectively. Even at 48 I am still learning such things. To be candid, over the years there have been many times when I acted far from gentlemanly. Proud of that? No. Speaking honestly? Yes.
Respect should stretch further than the sexes. Believe me I have been played like a violin by members of the fairer sex. Treated my heart as if it merely a piece of meat! But this poem is the first time in here I have self-reflected. You are an immense writer by the way.

Re: Re. A Gentleman
That is such an astute statement, Trouble_Loves_Me! It reveals more so much about your character. It's a true gentleman who admits his faults and subsequently corrects them.

Amen! Five Stars! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
