Image for the poem 9/11

9/11

A solemn day
Every year around late August
I feel the day approaching as summer fades
Then last night I turned to my wife
Just said "9/11"
Eyes cast down
There's nothing to say

I think about the bells being rung
I think about all those babies who are grown now
I think about where I was that day
The sky brilliant blue turning to ash
Fear gripping me
Silence in a city that never is quiet

I live here, I never left
Those years that followed
The terror alerts and that uneasy feeling
We made it through with courage and something else
Humanity amongst the haters
We breathe another day awash in freedom
