Image for the poem The Carrion Line

The Carrion Line

They gather on home's battle field
Coal-black feathers, crusted in blood
Scraps of flesh caught in their beaks
Another murder in the family

They confer over a fresh corpse
Squabble over every wound
A bone to pick, but rarely shared
The remnants subject to the devil's call

They yet engage in bloody rivalries
Locked in their combat, taking flight
Severing loose family ties
Flesh dropped with a thousand lies.
