In Her Eyes
I looked into her eyes and I no longer saw it there
I thought back and tried to remember the last time I’d seen it
And I could swear it was there in her eyes only yesterday
But anyone can fake it, it’s not hard
Just act kindly and speak softly and you’re halfway home
Regardless of what you feel inside you can fake your way through
Right up until you’re ready to go
And now she was
The kindness drained away from her voice and her eyes were cold marbles
Staring out at me as though at a never before seen thing that makes your skin crawl
I fought back tears since they would be useless and simply make me look weak
If she no longer felt the love we had shared so long then there really wasn’t a thing to do
I said goodbye with as much dignity as I could muster
The tears could wait until I was alone
She looked at me queerly and turned back to her small suitcase
And told me that she would send for the rest of her things at a later time
I felt the urge to fight come over me but I held it back with force of will
It would be a useless endeavor to even try
So with my eyes dry and my head held high
I watched her go
I was sure I’d seen love in her eyes only yesterday
