Autumn II : The Holocaust of Leaves
Bones of burgeoned frond
autumnal crisp, bootlaced
underfoot - step-by-step -
Scattered remains, cartilage
tea leaves, omens of change
chilling as the smell
of their burning bodies
floating ashen t'ward me
~

Thank you. I always think of the Holocaust when I see ashes in the air ( which was almost the name of this poem ).

I like the imagery cast from bootlaced, and omen.
"chilling as the smell "
"burning bodies"
"floating"
a short but powerful write
rich with views from the control chamber.
the word gripping comes to mind
well penned Ahavati.

Thank you, Samael. This series will be short bursts of observational thought. I'm trying to stay under 50 words. Trying. LOL.

Dark, but a poetic treat! Line 5 transformed and took the poem to heights leaves rarely achieve. I LOVE this. 💕
Living in the country, we did not burn them. Instead, we piled them high and played in the crispy hills!

And I LOVE You! 💜
Exactly, why burn when you can play hide-and-seek in them? [muchnonsense]
I'm glad you enjoyed this. 🍁🍂💕

This just ROLLS off in spoken word so beautifully! Wonderful!

Powerful and poignant...reminded me of a poem of Leonard Cohen's from "Flowers for Hitler".

Thanks, Harry. My ancestors were from Latvia and dwindled to nothing during the Holocaust. I'm very familiar with Cohen's poem. Thank you for reminding me.

I actually enjoy the fallen leaves, now that I don't have to rake and bag, 100's of bagfuls of them for curbside pick up. It's on my list to write about them, but everytime I sit down to write lately, it all just goes "poof!" and I lose the momentum. Oh well--maybe your poem will kick start mine about leaves!

I Love fallen leaves as well, just not burning ones! There are all sorts of beautiful things to do with them once the fun is spent.
Poetry inspiring poetry! What a novel idea in a poetry site! I look forward to reading it!

I loved this piece - anything bound in nature now - especially this dark view of Autumn - I always had the view that Autumn was the funeral and Winter was the wake - a cheery thought huh?
