Capricious Beast (song) (a work in progress)

You wed a capricious beast,
at least your mind did.
You fed it everything, learned what it liked; it
started to follow you, keeping close behind; it
sang about all those truths in the sky where
the yellow is the lightest.

Rarely this capricious beast was happy sleeping:
tossed and turned, but you could speak
and make its breathing even.
So early it woke you up
and stole your sheets; when
you didn't mind the cold too much, it would bite at your heels
for no good reason.

I can't shake the reasons
to leave you alone -
my kind, my restless mind and my
volatile soul;

can't shake the reasons, no,
they're stuck on like ears,
and my mouth is so damn small
it's hard to hide sharp teeth in here.

...

You kept the beast around; it thought you lovely.
If you'd have looked into its eyes, you'd've seen it getting ugly.
You gave your beating heart to satisfy it:
deep in smoke, the beast was charred; gave back a snapping riot.

So now in solitude you search a forest clearing.
It howls all this for you in hopes that you will hear it:
"I cannot pull horns from head, or spit my fangs out; I am
made to roar and run and shed; I cannot change what I am."

- can't shake the reasons
to leave you alone:
my kind, my restless mind, my
volatile soul.

Can't shake these reasons, love;
they're stuck on like ears,
and my mouth is so damn small it's hard to hide
sharp teeth in here.
