Like a horse or a crocodile
People always ask me
Why the long face?
Some people are too stupid to get it
Some people should know better
Like Doctors or therapists
Psychologists and psychiatrists
All struggling with the question
Why the long face?

They debate possible explanations
They consider different medications
With all their complicated connotations
They’ve tried everything to sedate me
With constant lying to placate me
For them it is all about compliance
Ignoring me and my defiance
A different drug, a mood enhancer
Whilst avoiding the easiest answer
Because it is professionally unpalatable
Is it any wonder
Why the long face?

As a child, sexually abused
Beaten on a regular basis
Tortured just for the hell of it
Firstly by evil parents
Then evil men of the cloth
From 5 years old until 13
Spent time in foster homes
None of them that good
Got married believed I’d been saved
Stayed married over 30 years
Wife cheated 6 times that I know of
Been treated just like a door mat
Especially by those who claim to love
Open heart surgery, bypass
One fucked up amputation
Two successful amputations
No legs to speak of
Confined to a wheelchair
Great difficulty with trousers
Problematic even taking a shit
Totally and terminally impotent
Is that possibly why the long face?

Could my long face and melancholia
Be completely justifiable
Could it be righteous?
Is just part of what I’ve become?
Or maybe what I am becoming
Do I need to take drugs?
For the ease and satisfaction
Of the professionals and others
Do I need to be a zombie?
Or a zoned out junkie
Just to please society
Do I need to loose
The long face?

Maybe I am becoming a butterfly
A stainless steel butterfly
With claws and teeth
Who takes no shite
Who takes no prisoners
Who gives the fakers and skull rattlers
A defiant middle finger
Fuck you and all your works
I’m becoming a stainless steel butterfly
With a long face and a grin
And if you don’t like it
You can simply fuck off
And join the shit pile
