Smile - - - for the Unmask your mask Comp
There was a time
When I used to lie
To get others in trouble
I played the innocent
Sometimes it would work
Sometimes it wouldn’t
I’d play the victim
Even when I wasn’t
Classmates sometimes
Would get in trouble
As my mask slipped
Secretly I’d smile
There was a time
I used to pretend
To be something
I clearly wasn’t
Full of pride and ego
Full of machismo
As cool as Elvis
Sometimes I would
Get the girls
Sometimes not
As my mask slipped
Secretly I’d still smile
There was a time
I professed love
In order to get sex
Love was lust
I played the game
And so did they
Sometimes it would
Work in my favour
Sometimes not
But I did get
At least some sex
As my mask slipped
Secretly I’d smile
This is the time
I don’t lie
I don’t pretend
I don’t profess
I view masks
As cowardly nonsense
No point in hiding
Not any more
Don’t give a shit
About what you think
No more masks
I smile out loud

I like seeing your real face David...I like everyone's real face much, much better than the proposed one...it's heartbreaking when a mask is revealed and removed...I've always pondered why it was ever felt there was a need for one to begin with...

I think masks are used to try and win acceptability - the problem is that most people use them therefore we cant know what acceptability is :-( ehugs on their way - thank you :-)

So much wisdom, within your words, my friend!!
For soo long....for soo many reasons....it seems we hide behind soo many masks. Disguised, we find security in the false sense of anonymity....or belonging. And for awhile, this seems to work--until one day, we realize that we have lost sight of whom we truly are . (sadly...when it comes right down to it, we need to be ourselves first--openly...honestly--before we can be anything at all, for anyone else!)
Thank you for the valuable lesson! ( huuugggsss) Unfortunately, though, there will be those that never seem to learn from it!

I think for many like myself, don't learn important lessons until they are older - I think of me in my 20's and I wish I knew then what I know now - life would have been so much easier :-) thank you - 1000 ehugs on their way :-)

Bravo, David. It takes courage to be honest about who you were, and become yourself in a world continuously trying to make you something else.

I have found that masks hide the true beauty of a person far more than one would expect. Give me straight up, in your face, honest and true...I'm all in. I'm the one who used to take the blame for others so they wouldn't get in trouble, such a big softy. Give me the real you and I'm well content! Good luck in the comp!

The world would be a much happier place if everyone could let go of pretense and come out from behind the façade that pride constructs between us...
A truly great expression David!

It's a sad, sad world - I see no real evidence that it can or will improve - man is basically selfish :-( thank you for your wise words :-)
