a visit
I miss you dad
lonely shadows cast
in an empty room at noon
your chair sits in the corner
the grandfather clock chimes
a cherished part of you
when I was in trouble
I remember slowly
cleaning its intricate carvings
left to ponder my mistake
you keep me company today
my mind wanders
into dangerous grounds
you sit with me patiently
like you did when I was small
& ill in the middle of the night
I'm sick now
you've come from your place in the cosmos
to give me an encouraging voice
tell me quietly
"leave the drink alone
you are your most vulnerable
to bad spirits when drunk"
"they will seek to overcome you
steal your power
thrash & destroy your soul"
"you have your marching orders
this is war keep vigilant soldier
in this world you have defeated many demons"
"keep an eye out for me
I will be there to greet you
when your time here is done"

This reminds me so much of the relationship I had with my own late father. He didn't care for my drinking either, and he was ALWAYS supportive despite my wasted ways. He wasn't a spiritual man but he was invariably decent. I still miss him after all these years. Thanks for sharing this superb and moving write.

Wow, such a touching poem. Your words bring your Dad to life & he's easily envisaged in this superb write. He's warning you about the dangers of drink. Sounds like good advice, advice you already know I'm sure. Great memories here, nice pic too. :-)
