The Writer - - - (For world poetry day)
Some poetry leaves me cold
There, I’ve said it
Most prose bores me to tears
There, I’ve said that too
I am not inspired by
Libraries or bookshops
Full of wooden racks and
Shelves of old books
With dusty old jackets
It’s a paper cemetery
Where words go to die
Written diarrhoea or
Scribed masturbation
Does not impress me
I am not impressed by
A writer stroking his ego
Or stroking his manhood
Poetry should describe
Contrast and compare
Challenge or make angry
What is the point of writing
Without emotional stimulus
And a wee bit of self
Poetry without self
Is dry like a bad training manual
I want to laugh out loud
I want to cry a river
I want to get so very angry
I want to feel that warm
That warm fuzzy feeling
I don’t want to feel cheated
I don’t want to feel bored
I don’t want to feel nothing
Write with passion
Write with intent
Add a wee bit of self
Deliberately Cause
An emotional reaction
Then you’ll become
The writer
I’d want to read

I think world poetry day blew a fuse when you uttered such insensitive lines... which really begs the question, does poetry have feelings?
Great little poetic ramble written with purpose and passion... you angry poet!

Enjoyed reading this - thank you

'If it doesn't start with a strong emotion, why write it?' ( a vague memory of a comment by Robert Frost I think, but don't hold me to it)

Well at least your WPD poem was happier than mine LOL! That said, I totally agree with you, poetry should invoke emotion and when it doesn't, I lose interest. It's all about letting emotion flow and pouring out one's heart. A reader wants to feel and connect. Enjoyed this angry spill.

emotional content is so important to me - I want to feel the passion, the pain, that's why I read poetry, it makes me feel alive :-)
