I Honor You
When they met, a 'He' of their species
Approached a 'She' with assured strut,
While His throaty growl and ears laid back
With interest to stir His fair She
As He bared His fangs sniffing the air.
Her green eyes searched his amber orbs
As He leaned in to brush His whiskers
Across Hers that twitched, ears that flicked.
The gesture charged through as She rose,
Hearing His notes, knowing His strength would
Serve and protect Her, their little ones
After coming while they suckled Her.
Then came the time when He mounted Her
With His mighty roar heard miles around,
Repeat the act many times that day
Till they fell away wanting to rest.
He tracked a wild boar to bring to Her
So He and His queen could partake.
He preened Her fur of the meal's blood stains,
And nuzzled, saying 'I honor you.'
As the months passed and Her belly grew
She called out to Him as He groomed Her.
The season of hunting had blessed them
Taking monkeys & deer by the score.
Then the litter of cubs came to be
And the couple was like royalty,
And as through the jungle they played with
The creatures who one day they'd prey on.
All three of the youngsters grew strong
While their Mother & Father made plans
For the next brood of babies to birth
Let their number increase on this earth.
And it's time of the season to mate
As they go back to where it began.
End of day as She closes Her eyes
While He preens Her stripes & hears Her purr.
The red sun has set, it is dusk
And the birds in the branches call out.
When He nuzzles His tigress is due
With Her saying 'I will honor you.'
