& bitter sweet poison          
in shades of night          
where I treasure          
each terracotta tinted tear          
that traced its way across          
my knuckle kissed mouth          
         
I've never been afraid          
to risk it all between          
your toxiferous layers          
of alabaster symmetry          
permeated with dark days          
that linger in far-off places          
until dead-eye memories          
remind you of how
you've always been the target...          
         
I carry empty promises          
where my spine should be          
& try to fill the vacuum          
with heroin love letters          
once-upon-a-never stories          
built on frail foundations          
just waiting to crumble          
         
and would a promise          
have backbone          
if lies we told ourselves          
had integrity;          
would our smiles          
not forget their shape          
if we never believed          
dreams were meant for us...          
         
do you dance when there's no rhythm    
burn in the absence of flame    
devour your own tongue    
without fear of the taste    
or do you prefer to be quiet    
simply because you've learned  
suffocating is more difficult
