Misery Unplugged

I'd like to believe
there's a button in our heads
that resets humanity
reverses
evil
and unplugs misery

That we could wake
to a fresh new world
free from fear and greed
wiser for our mistakes
and ready to reach
for the stars

I'd like hatred
deprivation and the agonies of war
to be lessons of the past
for us all to work together
and our deeds to be driven
by love

But for fighting monsters
on the eve of destruction
in a last ditch stand
to save our souls
as seven billion watch
all I have are pills

They smile
in a bottle by my bed
although they don't seem to
help me sleep
while I can't find the button
that forgets
