Patchwork
We are all abominations,
Gnashing our teeth and tearing at our clothes,
Letting the quaking of our knees give way to the hatred that flows,
Spilling deep crimson as we rob the freedom of those we oppose.
Speaking to maim, speaking to gain
We drip the hot poison,
Dose after dose,
Is this what we boast?
A fractured land that once reigned supreme,
Waving her vivid colors for all to see,
Oh, sweet independence we relish thee,
From coast to coast,
From sea to shining sea,
Has everything that we’ve fought for gone to disease?
Defeated we cower on these same shaky knees,
Like it or not, this is plague,
We’ve fallen to sickness as we stomp upon the graves of our dead,
At what point did we let others opinions drown out the voices in our heads,
We love the idea of love,
But we love to hate more,
Because the road to light is rugged and coarse,
Do not deny what you know to be true,
We’ve hit the idea home,
Gaze into our reflections,
We all stand black and blue,
Lie all you want but our eyes breathe the truth.
So tell me, what is our boast?
Will we abandon each other in our nation’s time of need?
Will we stew in our dark thoughts as our hatred breeds?
Or will we divorce this fractured mentality of self,
Embrace the unity that has collected dust on the shelf,
And rediscover the lost art of loving something other than ourselves.
So, sisters and brothers,
Family and friends,
Push politics aside and let’s appreciate this great land,
With eyes to a brighter future that so many seek to hide,
Look past what separates us,
Look past our pride,
Because a collective that hates is a collective that divides,
But a people who loves is a nation that thrives.
Gnashing our teeth and tearing at our clothes,
Letting the quaking of our knees give way to the hatred that flows,
Spilling deep crimson as we rob the freedom of those we oppose.
Speaking to maim, speaking to gain
