Three Women
There are three women in my apartment…
I am not sure what they are discussing,
but I am smiling as I listen
to how they overlap each other
never giving silence a chance.
I visualise my bookshelf;
there is not a single female philosopher in there…
I imagine it must be hard to think
in that kind of internal environment.
Still, I am smiling,
which is a fine thing these days.
They will continue,
I will pour another drink
and pick up my guitar
happy that they will carry on,
happy that I can play over the din.

Simone de Beauvoir

Hard to believe you ain't got no Simone de Beauvoir. (Oh, wait, no, actually
that would be easy to believe.) I bet the reason there isn't one on your
bookshelf is you haven't bought any. "No female philosophers" is an old
husband's tale brought up by guys who should know better, but obviously don't.
Of course, philosophy is famous for its old boys network; and it's one of the
most conservative of all academic disciplines (well, ok, engineering is worse) so
it's no surprise there's a low percentage of women. But it doesn't have
anything to do with gender, just academic prejudice. Here's a list of well-known
ones from wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_female_philosophers

It's an even worse stereotype when taken the other way.
I'd advise that you stick with "literal", or, better yet,
change the metaphor to a less prejudiced one.

[I will pour another drink

happy that they will carry on,
happy that I can play over the din.] Men are not the only ones who do this...I find your ending full of truth.

I enjoyed that. It's easy for me to relate, especially when my mum and her friends pull the Chardonnay off of the shelf.
Don't complain about the stereotyping, without it we'd all be walking around in shady alleys[Shady alleys are dangerous] or taking a chance and having unprotected sex with prostitutes[Prostitutes all have STDs].
Any way more often then not guys in bars can go on and on.

Just perusing around minding my own and wham I run into a feminist that can't help but to ruin a good read trying to point out shit that isn't there just to avoid the silence. Just read the poem and keep it moving.

women have no need of philosophy. they make their own rules, & change them as they go along. their beauty is the philosophy that inspires me...

I see what you did there John, flattery, it usually works well helps to quiet the cackling from my internal dialogue. :)
