God & a Little Black Dog

The man on the bus
told us
God must've got tired
of being everywhere at once
until things turned so bad
he wound up being nowhere at all

That's why so much
evil
was happening in the world
Maybe God
was too old for the job
He ought to step aside
let someone younger take over
before these end times
got too far out of hand

We needed someone
a hundred per cent reliable
the man said
a whizz kid go-getter
to take on the Devil
vanquish his minions
and finish what God began

Who
we asked
In the entire history of the universe
was there anyone or anything
so perfectly enthusiastic
about his job
But all we could come up with
was a little black dog
with a stick in his mouth
a little black dog
called Death
