As the Universe Conspires

I’ve hailed my life, a blessing.
I’ve disparaged it, a curse.
This, usually, was dependent on
The coins that graced my purse.

I’ve portrayed prodigious mysteries;
Limned the secrets of the runes.
I’ve engendered myself a lonely crab
Scuttling amongst the dunes.

I’ve been drunk on the wine of triumph.
I have groveled in defeat.
I’ve plumbed the depths of humility,
Scaled the heights of brash conceit.

In the end, these were but minor points
In life’s overall design.
The all-important detail is—
The choice was always mine.
