Lil Bernard

Lil Bernard

What do you do as a kid when a man punches your mom?
Do you look for a gun, put it in your palm and send him to GOD?
What if there were multiple dudes who've done this?
Do you kill them all and have your freedom no longer exist?
This poem is about a young kid that I'll call Lil Bernard
Whose childhood experiences have left him permanently scarred
He's confided in me to divulge to you some of his story
This one exposes something that haunts him to his core sorely
You see, his mom was in several domestically violent relationships
He, even today, remembers vividly being exposed to that shit
Still wishing that he had done something and had more strength
But he was just a kid and would have definitely gotten his ass whipped
He knows this but still deeply wishes that he could've kept her from harm
So he became a man and vowed to himself to forever keep her under his arm
He went above and beyond to many extremes trying to accomplish this
It resulted in everything that he did becoming expected instead of respected
This man took on a responsibility that wasn't his for oh so many years
Instead of living life for himself like all of his peers that didn't have kids
Everything that he did feels like it was in vain and unappreciated
Now he walks around deeply heartbroken and extremely jaded
He's told me that everyone keeps advising him not to change
To him it doesn't correlate and sounds really deranged and strange
Why would anyone do the same things expecting a different outcome?
He's viewed the equation, done the math, but came out with a different sum
