No Excuse For Sitting On Your Ass!
We have come to a year in which choices will be made
in the U.S. maybe knocking down walls
primaries leading to a general election
a new Chief Executive elected in the Fall
For the Dems it looks like either a woman
or a Jewish democratic socialist stepping up at bat
of course succeeding the black guy
sure haters will be around all three not much we can do about that
I could easily define the reason for a preference
that is a story for another day
but fifty years ago would these have been probable choices
probably would have locked you away
Intriguing is the Republican Party
usually they pick the next in line
but I have to say some of the candidates
truly do boggle my mind
The momentum now is with a non office holder
taps into angst and people's fears
very short on policy specifics
but will take you and pick up the tab for the beers
Two senators of Cuban descent are running
if you ask them Obama can do nothing right
compared him to Jimmy Carter
but in terms of character a lot in Jimmy to like
Don't know what to say about Carson
may share skin but his take on history isn't close to mine
might want to learn more about reading maps
like Romney I think he is out of time
What I hope for is a solid general election
in which real issues ruled the day
not gossip about smoking weed as a student
or whether or not someone is gay
And I know I will get the right wing bothered
but the question of being a Muslim is wasted time
It is about following the Constitution
that really should occupy our minds
Truth be known my distaste is aimed more at Congress
the ineptness is historic all around
would wipe DC clean of all if I could
the broom swept would be my favorite sound
So to those in the states who are going to
just bitch, moan, and complain
staying home is a sorry answer
just ensures things stay the same
You see even if you don't vote top ticket
local issues do need your concern
remember Nero who decided to fiddle
while the great city of Rome burned?

Another correction, for verse 6 - those "two senators" are of Cuban DESCENT.
Agree with the last verse - low voter turnout gets elected into office governments that do not represent their people. I have lived through our own British general election of 2001 which was described as "a victory for the stay-at-home party", and kept in office Tony Blair.

Sometimes I think when you have a candidate with a wide degree of popularity, a sort of cult of personality surfaces- if that person can do anything by him/herself. The other branches of government aren't consisdered. I did vote for Obama once but couldn't it a second time---I found the national convention distasteful, parading about how Obama's major foreign achievement was killing someone. Also was pleased with his environmental record which included more off-shore oil wells, until there was a spill.
I have two friends in the UK who feel that since Tony Blair the real Labour Party has gone on holiday and never came back. Now from people on FB, at least, there seem to be some voice suggesting getting out of the EU.

*sigh* there is a deep connection tween the US and Eire and also a deep connection tween the Irish and African Americans
Frederick Douglas gave a fine speech in our capital when we needed friends and back in the US he campaigned tirelessly for our rights as immigrants
that was a time when there was passion in politics, when people actually and sometimes litrally put their life on the line for what they believed in , to counter injustice
Trump, for me opitomises all that's wrong with the political system in the US.
Clinton ...god help the world if y'all give her the whitehouse for four yesrs.
Cruze .. Dunno 'bout him. Sometimes he makes sense, sometimes he seems awful ignorant

I think we may share some views on politics. I have a tendency to back candidates who don't win. I am actually lucky if my favorite gets the party nomination. I did like Gore in 2000 and will always think invading Iraq would have been avoided if Bush hadn't been president. Shoot I think even his father voiced concerns about regime change during the Persian Gulf affair. My first choice was actually John Edwards in 2008. I did support Obama but not for a second term.
Though of course there are distinctions I see people in Europe voice similar concerns about the state of politics.
Indeed I can think of a few people who seemed to have had an easier time of it in the UK. Paul Robeson was a favorite of my mother's. Struck a cord with people all over the world who had been exploited in the workplace. Then you have Hendrix. More recently a guy I had the chance to meet , Randall Robinson, was warmly greeted in the UK while advocating for the end of Apartheid. The organization he started was aided greatly by funds raised aboard, while the US government was busy tapping phones and discrediting him as a Commie.

Hello my friend; wanted to let you know that I favorited this... Politics is a slippery slope, and writing about it is not easy, nor is it a talent that I have, though you do have a mind for it, and a pen that relates it for me easily, very well done my friend... Cruz, he concerns me, is he the one that denies climate change?

Normally I am engaged with checking out speeches from all sides, even lesser third party candidates. This election however I find a few of the Republicans so dishonest and vindictive that I haven't been as comprehensive. I don't think Cruz is the only Republican denying climate change. I do know Cruz has some people in the senate that can't stand him, like John McCain. All of them want to channel Reagan but Reagan had a big tent concept that doesn't appear to wow the current GOP.
