REFUGE
An elliptic moon brighter
Than the light of fishing boats
Upon the black sea
That fell on the swell
Of the port shore
Where Amal's body washed in
No passport will help
Where he's going
Or a medical degree or rich father
And he won't need a home
Or hope either
Or nations or states or borders
Or mine or yours
For home is where the hating is
His thoughts
Half water half dust
His choices
Drought or drown
He can no longer remember
The home fires of the Sahara
Bright in the shadow of the moon
Casting long camel shadows
Or his girl on the barrel of a gun.
Than the light of fishing boats
Upon the black sea
That fell on the swell
Of the port shore
Where Amal's body washed in
No passport will help
Where he's going
Or a medical degree or rich father
And he won't need a home
Or hope either
Or nations or states or borders
Or mine or yours
For home is where the hating is
His thoughts
Half water half dust
His choices
Drought or drown
He can no longer remember
The home fires of the Sahara
Bright in the shadow of the moon
Casting long camel shadows
Or his girl on the barrel of a gun.
