Into the mist

My only true friend standing along side me on enemy lines. Warning me of future terrorists joining the fight. Only seconds to dodge the bullets flying from both sides. He helped move earth for protection. Motioned to line the trenches with broken glass and surround them in jagged rocks, letting all assholes alike to fall victim to our madness.
Only in madness have I begun to see clearer than ever, we are alone in this battle. And moment more when I went to tap on the shoulder of my compadre  he falls before me. I see him drenched in blood. Kneeling over him I try to stop the bleeding. Looking in the eyes I see his life fade into darkness then there is no more I can do but fight back the tears. For so long we have fought this war together, never had I thought I would ever have to fight it alone. I linger a moment knowing it is imperative to move out line of fire but I can't feel anything more than my heart and soul being ripped from my body. What feels like a moment and eternity all at once has turned into a moment which I will live in the rest of my life. I move for cover and drag him behind the barricade with me. "I'm so sorry I failed you!"
Grabbing my weapon I stand to meet the unexpected enemy in the eye. Staring me down he pulls the trigger. I look down and my hands are still coated in my Compadre's blood... No, now it's my blood too from a gut wound. Falling to my knees I feel nothing but defeat. I have lost three or more battles in just one moment of my life.  I look over, he seems so peaceful. Maybe God found him.
"Take us both father. Take him before me, but please take us from this Hell."
Staggering to a final collapse on my stomach I look my love in the eyes as he fades out of sight.
