Once there was You
Once there was you
with a face and a name
words in thoughts expressed
tattooed thunderously on falling rain
your thoughts were real
once there were footsteps
together imprinted on the sand
when the glass broke
drizzles from rainbows
blurred the trails
once there were promises
whispered in the wind
nothing changed
but the You had gone
disappearing in the mists
of empty dreams.

This is fascinating Grace. I take this as a loss of identity, which can be terrifying, but it disappears in "empty dreams," which can be oddly peaceful if not paradise. It could be death. Very thought-provoking and skillful write!

Sometimes people change and you don't really know them anymore. This poem was inspired by a true story where this woman just left after years of marriage, because she felt like she was living with a stranger. Sad but it can happen to the best. Thanks for reading Crowfly...:)

Sadness and silent anguish actually, but you are right. The person that inspired this still could not fathom why she felt like that, but truth is the husband must have felt the same way...familiarity breeds contempt and then they drifted apart, growing away.:) Thanks for reading Soul...:))

The sadness in his poem is reminiscent of "I Dreamed a Dream" from Les Miserables. Like the song, in spite of the pain, I can't help but want to read it again and again... jj
