The Cosmic Joke
His friends or family didn't believe him
That life was more than eating, laughing and small talk.
He set out on a journey to prove them wrong
To show them the truth
He found the highest mountain he could
And prepared to climb to its zenith
He scaled it's walls
Traversed the ledges
And out maneuvered the mountain lion
And still he was not even half way to the top
But the more he persevered
The more skilled he became
And understood the mountain.
How it grew to the form it currently took
How his mind began to mirror the mountain
And his thoughts seemed more elevated.
Soon, the mountain was helping him on his way
Giving more leverage for his feet
Crevices to grab onto.
Limbs to help pull him up.
Looking up, above the clouds
He could faintly see the peak
He began to doubt that this was the way.
That the journey seemed more significant than the goal
And a sadness swelled in him.
That going much further would put the journey to an end
And he may find out the truth
And have nothing left to question.
Does the mountain care how high or big it is?
No. It just is.
And It accepts that.
He realizes the truth was not at its peak.
It's the spirit of his journey.
He decides to carry on to the top
Within reach. He comes to the last ridge.
Pulls himself up to a grassy landing.
Stands strong feeling relatively accomplished.
Looking out onto the world
The majestic landscape from above
Taking in a deep breath of the thin, but pure air
He hears a faint sound behind him
Like laughing and talking
He moves towards the sound.
Stepping through the mist
Reveals a group of people sitting around a picnic table
Eating, laughing and having small talk
When he realizes it was his family and friends
When they see him, they invite him over to join them
Somewhat concerned and confused
He sits with everyone he recognizes and is familiar with
And begins to eat their tasty food
And then he starts to have small talk about their everyday troubles
And he understands them.
Realizing that they too already knew the truth,
He starts to laugh.
