Dignity

Upon this pyre I wait
My sins burning from my flesh
They sizzle and sting
One last kiss before
Breaking their bonds to this flesh
The frankincense and myrrh
Choke and enrage the demons within
They crowd within my throat
Scratching and hissing to break free
They make me cough and sputter
To gasp for the sweet air of life
The dark entity that circles my altar
Shrills with anticipation
It clicks its teeth and claws
Eager to taste my skin
And I crowded yet alone
Endure to die with dignity
