Colors

{*Quick Note*}: this poem goes out to anyone out there who is biracial and is tired of being label as something because they look a certain way.
Know that labels don't define who you are, it's your character that defines you. - Ms Jackson

As we look at the world and the people in it we all like to label.
I wish it were a fable, but I guess we're not capable of being understanding individuals.
Girl standing over there,
she has blonde hair and blue eyes,
she must be white, but she's really Cuban.
It don't matter she don't look like it, right?.
Boy over there,
sun kissed skin, curly hair,
can't be white, but he really is.
We're all different colors,
We're all different shapes,
We're all different sizes, but why don't people buy this?.
Little girl gets made fun of as mommy has fair skin while daddy has dark skin.
She's called a mutt as she cries and wishes she'd look like everyone else.
Family turns away mommy's little boy as he's not full blooded anything,
they don't want him around because he's not what they want.
We're all different colors,
We're all different shapes,
We're all different sizes, but why don't people buy this?.
He don't act like his race,
Saying you need to speak a certain way,
Act a certain way or you're just white.
She's so mixed you can't tell what she really is.
If only we can just find some bliss to take this ignorance away.
We're all different colors,
We're all different shapes,
We're all different sizes, but why don't people buy this?.
Light skin,
Dark skin we are all the same.
White, black, Puerto Rican, Mexican, Asian, German, Native American, Italian, Russian, we are all one nation of people.
Don't let them label you just be you.
We're all different colors,
We're all different shapes,
We're all different sizes, but why don't people buy this?.
So just because I look a certain should mean that I can't claim Im a certain way?.
I long for the day where you can be who you are without being assumed that you're whatever they think of you.
No one has a clue as they sit and stare at you till they finally ask you " what are you?".
We're all different colors,
We're all different shapes,
We're all different sizes, but why don't people buy this?.
To hell with all the labels,
Forget the prejudice and ignorance of others,
I'm human.
We're all different colors,
We're all different shapes,
We're all different sizes, but why don't people buy this?.
