the story is snow
the children so the manual explains are to write a short poem mid week post punctuation
editing and spelling tests as satisfying motivation
it sounds a little bleak if you ask me but what do i know about children who have never seen
snow you know in its bright fluff and stuff
about children who spend their small days cuffed to the poverty line and the education system inhaling only what is deemed necessary or is addictive
anyway
we have power words to support their writing help them to use imaginative language and phonetically plausible ccvcs and
punctuation
of course i am left longing for a little extra
something sparky and when i read the word pad on a power card yet not the word frozen i am perplexed and quickly discard it
i sneak a card from the box beneath 1.5 and 1.6
pen down the word frozen as if it is the night before christmas and i am peeking at presents
on the floor
before seeing the pupils
i plan how to lead them to the word i have chosen
i do not like forced choices
begin by drawing a snowman on the whiteboard
discuss how the children felt bending their fingers on a cold day
discuss the way ice looks
discuss the pictures of snow in books
let their tongues flick ideas around the space bouncing off the walls around until frozen falls from the lips of an unsuspecting student
and then move swiftly to paper and pencil
where they will jot down information worthy of assessment so their progress may be tracked and a list made of things they are lacking
meet the education criteria
while still inspiring some hysteria
on the last day bring in a bowl of fake snow
leave it in the fridge the night before
and in store for them is excitement
something stimulating for the mind rather than something to satisfy the confines of humans need for proof
children need no proof
they need only to spend their youth freely
on projects made for fun
their enjoyment as a collective is very rarely monitored
and certainly not for countrywide test scores
