Fourth World
You can have a mobile phone before food
You can have access to cigarettes before access to health care
You can have disease before immunisation
You can have a stealth bomber before a cure for cancer
You can see blood before a teacher
You can hold firearms before a child
You can taste ash before succulent steak
You can hear anguish before popular music
Surrounded by abhorrent opulence
We clutch desperately at empty things
Objects accrete in meaningless volume
Like numbers in a millionaires bank balance
I apologise for the bleakness of this poem, I promise to return to things more saucy and upbeat in the near future. This just happened to spring from my fingertips this morning. Thank you for sharing.
