Assumed Identity
It might be petty,
but can you actually pay attention to
who I am and what I want for once?
I'm sorry for disturbing you
in your perfect little world,
but can you stop assuming
that I'm the same person
who I was as a child?
Yeah, just go ahead
and buy me that again,
even though I told you years ago
that I didn't like it anymore.
Yeah, just keep telling people
that I enjoy doing that,
even though I haven't done it
since middle school.
Yeah, just keep telling your them
that I always do this and that,
even though I've never even thought to.
You assume that I haven't changed.
You assume you know all there is
to know about me, solely based
on how I was as a child,
small behaviors that didn't matter,
and wrongly perceived traits.
You assume I am what I'm not.
Sure, just ignore me
when I try to correct you.
Sure, keep insisting you know
exactly who I am and what I do.
Just because you watched me grow up
it does not mean you know me.
You stopped paying attention
many years ago,
you stopped bothering
to learn what I like,
or who I grew to be.
You assume because you created me
that I'm exactly like you.
You assume since I'm a teenager
that I like to party,
and get drunk,
and get high,
and have sex.
I am not like you.
I don't enjoy smoking,
I hate reality t.v.,
and I hate assuming I'm right.
I'm not like those teenagers.
I have never tried drugs,
I can't stand alcohol,
and I hate parties.
I'm a virgin for a reason,
I have no desire to jump every guy's bones.
Not every teenager follows that stereotype,
so stop assuming that I do.
I'm not out of control.
I'm not a party lover.
I'm not a drunk.
I'm not a drug addict.
And I'm not a whore.
So stop treating me like I am.
Start paying attention,
stop assuming lies,
and don't assume you know me so well
or get out of my life.
If you won't bother
to learn who I truly am,
then I have no reason to know you.
