Battoo
The boy climbs the basement stairs
Sees a bat dangling down
Hanging in the doorway
Is it a threat?
A little beast?
A vampire in repose?
The child thinks in the twilight
Then decides:
Proceeds with care
While glancing up
Seeing those beady eyes
Then through the door
Into his mother's arms
Then in later years
The bat appears
Inked on his shoulder
A companion for life
Friends 'til the end
Whatever comes.

The things we carry forward from our childhood reflect the importance of the moments of experience, Cool Write Crow1!

I love the message behind this, Crow. Our childhood never fully escapes us and as you write, our experiences become a permanent part of ourselves. Reflective piece.

Literally and figuratively. I've got that little bat tattooed on my right shoulder. Thanks Virginia.

I like this poem! It makes me think, is this what all of us are doing right now? We all had fears from our childhood but now we like those fears and turn them into a poem for others to enjoy. I hope this makes sense.

sometimes the weirdest things grab hold of us as kids and leave a permanent mark. even more permanent than a tattoo.

Very true. Fortunately some of them turn out to be benign, or at least harmless.

The title is fun. I really like this back-story for your tattoo. I often try to figure why someone has chosen certain designs for their tattoos.

Thanks, Gahdess. Guess that bat was a pretty big deal for my little brat mind.

i'll be honest & say this leaves me with somewhat mixed feelings... i see the whimsy but lined with questions of how far one needs to run to escape certain horrors...
... mayhaps i'm just sleep deprived
either way, fantastic write, crowfly

It's not a matter of running. It's a matter of accepting, realizing it wasn't a horror after all. Thanks, Katja.

your title is a portmanteau; found that word here in DU recently & I like using it.
symbol of fear that somehow becomes a statement of courage...
