Higher Grounds
unsure if i could bear
the fullness of my Becoming
through my unrelenting willingness
to fit in
i relinquished my right
to greatness
mediocrity
once a safety net
now a noose
insecurity
once my means of relating
now a false truth
at a young age
i sensed
the raw untapped power
of a world on the edge of oblivion
dive in
i said
what have you got to lose
yet the farther i swam from the shore
the more people i noticed
still standing on the beach
i splashed in the water
showed them how good it felt
to float
and still no one came
for a short while
(maybe only a lifetime or two)
i sat and waited
but the tsunami is coming
i feel it
in my bones
and it's now time for me
to keep swimming
it's time for me to reach for
