Ex Husband Ruminations
It’s strange to me
To have no internal stirrings
No want for you
No need for you
Nothing but irritation
To think...
For many tired years
I shared your lonely bed
Doggedly baked you doughy cookies,
Soft and warm in the middle
Just how you preferred them.
Brushed your crumbs from the table,
Lovingly washed the marinara
From your porcelain dinner plates
Gave you the children you
Felt completed your quest
Into adulthood.
Now you stand before me
Puffy faced and insolent
And I struggle to fathom
That I gave so much
And feel so little
Left only with
A paltry but
Absolute
Detachment.
To have no internal stirrings
No want for you
No need for you
Nothing but irritation
To think...
For many tired years
I shared your lonely bed
Doggedly baked you doughy cookies,
Soft and warm in the middle
Just how you preferred them.
Brushed your crumbs from the table,
Lovingly washed the marinara
From your porcelain dinner plates
Gave you the children you
Felt completed your quest
Into adulthood.
Now you stand before me
Puffy faced and insolent
And I struggle to fathom
That I gave so much
And feel so little
Left only with
A paltry but
Absolute
Detachment.
