when you were an ocean

You’re an ocean
vast and merciless
teeming with life

I stand before you
and know I am small
my life miniscule in its complexities
compared to the way
you caress foreign shores
I can only dream about

Like the sailors of old
I thought I could tame
the magic of your depths
and instead I found the way
you hold death in your hands
like sand slipping through my fingers
tiny particles clinging to my skin
like they’re holding on for life

I’m left with nothing more
than memories and stories
that crashed from your lips
onto the shores of my imagination
before I watched you ebb away
to inspire the fire behind other eyes

You’re an ocean
vast and merciless
teeming with life
and I reach out for your caress
knowing you could drown me
in your embrace
and in those moments
where I am weak and close to dying
I understand the madness of the sirens calls
my heart giving itself over
to the beauty of that death
I’ve never quite been able to pin down
love as elusive as the tides
that kiss my feet on a summer beach
rage in the storm
and let go of my hand
at the sight of the moon
