Sister
I remember open roads with trees dripping fruits.
You saw broken homes with lives poisoned at the roots.
I remember playing in the woods and ruling the land.
You saw me running and hiding from an abusive hand.
I remember my friends, the flowers and the bees.
You saw the other children beat me to my knees.
I remember veggie soup and buttered toast.
You saw it was the simple food I love the most.
I remember visits with daddy, when we'd laugh and play.
You saw saw the desire, and that he could never stay.
I remember asking for one more story every night.
You saw the fear of the nightmares I would fight.
I remember how you would always play with me.
You saw a drunken mother, and couldn't let me see.
I remember how you were always there.
You saw how much I needed your care.
