take it or leave it
there are two things I never take
when I finish building a job
and move away to the next;
any packing-box not opened from the last move
and any woman I’ve met
the same idea for both
something something travelling light
something something baggage
this time around got it wrong
will ditch the woman sure
and already chucked the boxes of whatever-the-fuck
but now there is a dog
got him by accident
him left behind at the place I’ve been living
by someone who decided
that a dog’s love
wasn’t on her bucket list
anymore
before I’d thought about it
he was mine
I call him my mate
and I mean it
so now I’m looking for a new job to build
anywhere
as long as I can take a dog there
when I’m thinking it plain
in hard daylight
seems fucking lame
to be working my life around
for that biscuit eating bastard
and his every day need for a beach
but
when it comes to quiet winter nights
my hand on him
is not just to keep him warm
not really
he's cost me over a grand in vet bills
in fourteen months
and I nearly sunk my boat last Christmas
when he jumped off it to chase the fish
sometimes I shake my head for his no-fucking-brains
can't leave him though
something something unconditional love
something something a better man for it

The women will always have the words, prob why we first moved our mouths in such funny ways...but who deserves em? Yup, those simple furry bastards...
As far as the write, i think its a real sign of your strength that you are well liked and read, yet very rarily is your words scrutinized, the content is usually whats discussed... Good on you for just being able to tell your tales, but gooder yet is your ability to make it look easy... its not
Cheers!

Good man Lb...the tricky part for me isn't the mechanics, but rather finding the stories...these days I've got my head on almost permanent record, looking for any damn thing worth getting down....and some days/weeks/months it feels like I've mined my life all the way out....just like it should be :-)
Cheers back at you man.

right, well I've spotted ten I's and I'ms ..is this a new venture into the wold of I ..or you..where's your conviction gone ..sold out to the nearest 20 year-old no doubt you ol' dog
reads fine man, no abrupt starts n stops, good use of space, consistent voice, a good start and a solid end.
the vet bills and the near sinking of the boat serves to give us a clear understanding of the ties you both have, regardless of the no brains
good stuff Hugh, keep shinnin' ..and praying NZ can still play rugger

We can play mate...we can play :-)
As for the rest, yes, the fucking 'I' word is leaking in everywhere these days...got no excuses for it, except maybe the word does have its uses after all :-)
Good on you Eamon, for keeping on keepin' on....

This reminds me of all the anarchists and their dogs they travel with, and the stray dog that sleeps in front of my home and escorts me home through "his territory" and makes a point of challenging every car and bike that passes by.

Ah, the stray dogs, and their own rules. I once walked a night in a shit-pot town in Madagascar, long after the curfew, and the town belonged to the dogs....was a wonderful and brutal experience, and they absolutely reflected the brutality of the town in daylight, with the same hardships, pecking order and hard lessons that the daylight had for the people who lived there.....dogs.....all of 'em....
Good man M...and good to see you back on the DU and doing your thing.

Like a blend of Gilbert's "Almost Happy", and Ray Lamontange's "Hobo Blues".
Sometimes a dog (or two in my case) is the only acceptable friend/luggage to the only person that can matter.
"something something" is a clever move with a subtle swagger.

never a truer word spoken.....
you're a goner.....he's there for life.....
its sad when they finally go of their own accord....

Compromising a life for animals usually turns out better than compromising a life for people - unless it's junior people, 'cos they too, occasionally lose their heads chasin' things. Oh wait, that's us ...
Trying to say, I liked it.
"got him by accident
him left behind at the place I’ve been living"
The second 'him' doesn't read smoothly; would prefer 'he was', you know?
But yep yep, a good ride, and one that left me warm to ya, cheers Hemi.

Ah well, considering he got hit by a car at the weekend (relax, he shook it off, mostly), right now he's for sure on my list of things to care about....luckily he bounced down the road like a trooper...which had me warming to him too :-)
