Equal Measure

I watched you sleep…
In lunar dreamscapes shadow there was warmth from your skin
On pillows of loving innocence I slowly drank you in

I inhaled your scent…..
Eyes wide shut to the possibilities that you would one day leave
The richness of your being, making your lies easy to believe

I heard you breathe….
I was aware and had knowledge of things you never said
I gave you opportunities to confide; instead it stayed inside your head

I touched your hand…
Not realizing that I knowingly loved you fully, you chose to hide
The parts that you thought were ugly or that I’d not abide

I kissed your lips….
In the beginning I knew my path, understanding we all have a past
Our relationship an example of why trust is key in making love last

I felt your heartbeat…
You never before had a sample of what true honest love should be
So when you could no longer hide, instead of coming clean;
you chose to walk away, not putting your trust and faith in me

I quietly cried
You said that you cared for me, but that I deserved a better man
And with time and distance ..I realize.. you were right.. I finally understand.

I said goodbye
The faith and trust I freely gave; was thrown away instead of treasured.
I am deserving of the love I give to be returned in equal measure.
