The Matizos Waded into Green Water
The matizos waded into green water hunting fish.
In the villa a paunchy man watched from the balcony.
Cross the bed lay a brown girl casually puffing on one
of his cigars.
He sighed and returned to her.
Up river men mined for gold and washed away the jungle.
A colored boy yelled a protest.
Silently a gray missile flew and the side of his head was blown away.
He fell and blood mixed with water and gold.
My father joined the burial as the body was carried then tossed
into the river.
There it floated gently, calmly, until a vacuum of green water consumed it.
