Agador Sparticus my Companion & Friend

He sat there
before me
eyes as blue as ice
so penetrating
so hopeful...he knew something
new was about to happen
he was looking to
me for the answer

My heart was
racing, hard.
With his stare,  
he was looking
right through me to the
core of my soul

I tried to
control it, to stop
my eyes from filling.
His gaze changed to
concern and he started
shifting on his feet
with worry

Never taking his eyes
away, not even for a moment
a single tear escaped and slid
down my cheek.
He knew in that instant
what was
happening..his gaze became
frantic. He wanted to come to
me to comfort me, but he
could not. I whispered to him and
spoke in quiet tones
trying to calm the fear
that was creeping in to
the corners of his eyes

He knew then
that it would be the
last time he would see me
be with me
he fought that with a heroic
will that even I did not
anticipate.

So desperately he tried to
free himself from the barrier
that now kept us just feet
apart, and it took all the
will power I had to stand
look one last time into his
beautiful face, touch him
with my voice, tell him
he was going to be ok
knowing that the memory
of that moment would
be forever ingrained in his
mind and his heart and every
sense he had ever known.

Without looking back
I walked away, leaving him
in the hands of his new mommy
hopefully erasing my scent
from his memory sooner
rather than later.
