Been told a lot of things in life been made to think they’re true
Been told I shouldn’t question things do as they say not do

Been told I was a lovely child but just can’t work it out
Been told a lot of awful things when I was knocked about

Been told that Jesus loves me so been told he died for me
Been told he knows my every move and all things he can see

Been told I need to go to school to learn to read and write
Been told to turn the other cheek to those who want to fight

Been told to smile no matter what and not be seen to frown
Been told that men are rulers and to keep our women down

Been told that politics is a joke been told I’m not involved
Been told it’s complicated how the whole damned world evolved

Been told that those with money been told they worked so hard
Been told they own a thousand miles while I own just one yard

Been told about the people who have nothing more to eat
Been told they have no water and been told they have no meat

Been told I still need telling and been told about the wars
Been told to keep my mouth shut or I could end up with scars

Been told the press are wonderful been told its people’s news
Been told to keep my mouth shut or the press will gag my views

Been told so much I can’t believe a single word I’m told
Been told the truth at last by be until I’m grey and old
