Leaving the Avenue

Count the cracks
in the lime's
greedy green sky
the glint of winter's
barren smile
virgin chill
breeds baring bough
sap starving
each new moon

The dead drift
slowly underfoot
cruel pauper's carriage
crushing twigs
to wheel past
frowning frost lined clouds
set mourning
to a northern tune
our browns awaiting blue

And as we cling
each gust devours
more tired souls
for final thrill
of mazy round
in dizzy spin
to unknown ground

My sister
now so far beyond
kind spring and summer
gently grown
dare we dance adventure wild
until the dark earth
claims us both
to lie together
side by side
before the rot
shall scream our last
through silent gnarl of vein
