Damp from a nighttime of mourning
Talent wasted in ghetto graffiti weep near sidewalks
Sirens blare distant warnings

An un-kept child
Lost amidst five thousand
Tattered and eyes wild
Victim of drug’s induction; never planned

Red lips and a hollow smile
Flaunted in hunger and pain
Death fears such a mile
There is no gain

Grand childhood dreams
Broken from parental degradation
Clothes torn at every seam
Confidence hidden by hesitation

A hopeful rose
Struggles to blossom
Beautiful unsung prose
Silent as the grave comes

Society’s obscenity

We must look beyond
Take hold of a broken hand
Heal with the fragile wand
From finite heart and mind

And end
