Modern Day Cannibals
It was a cold early September morning,
the yawning sun barely peeking
from the curtain of clouds nestled
atop a mountain from yonder;
this young Wall Street executive sets off
on a luxury yacht with his beautiful wife.
Their destination unknown--
just trying to get away from it all,
a month after the worst financial crisis
since the Great Depression;
they sailed the seven seas for days
stopping only to gaze at the lovely stars,
and watch the crescent moon
slowly disappearing until they fall asleep...
Like the bursting of the housing bubble,
big waves abruptly pounded his yacht--
tossing it relentlessly across the Pacific
for seven consecutive moonless nights.
The yacht, out of gas and powerless--
just floated with the ocean currents,
going in the direction of the wind,
until it reached an uninhabited island.
Forty-five days and nights had passed
still no rescue crew in sight,
only the clear blue waters
which reflect the color of the sky,
as far as his weary eyes can see.
He had consumed every single food
the island has to offer: from coconuts
to sea weeds, and whatever the sea
can provide for each passing day.
The only thing left was the corpse--
of his dearly beloved, still warm
and pleasing to his hungry eyes;
his nearly-deranged mind contemplates,
"She died so I may live, her body to nourish me."
That day he had a feast!
Why am I not surprised at all
when his Wall Street instinct prevailed--
feeding our minds with greed,
and devouring our hard earned cash
slowly, until we bleed...
Beware!
There's a lot of his kind
just lurking in every street corners;
hiding in plain sight,
waiting for their prey...
