In Ruins (A Shadow of Doubt Part 2)

Brent sat up. He felt better this way. Next to him, in the same bed, was Gem. She was lying still, sleeping her life away. Brent looked out the motel window to the abandoned black sky. The cliche flashing motel sign drifted echoes of neon light into their room. Brent thought hard about the situation. A few years back, he was a study freak. That was a long time ago. Now he was nothing more than a mess. He slithered out of bed and walked to the pile of his clothes on the nearby chair. He rummaged in the pocket to find his cigarettes. Taking one out of the packet by the slip of his lips, he lit it, took a long drag and walked to the window. There was something on his mind. Not the usual stuff either. He stared hard in the distance, watching cars speed by on the highway below. In the distance was the city. The big buildings, flashing neon and light pollution littered the sky. Anything you could expect from a city these days.
Gem sat up, with the blanket rolling down just enough to expose her breasts. She threw a fake smile in Brent’s direction. “Can I have one?” Brent gave her the pack, to which she mimicked his every move. Swipe, hold, light, suck and blow.
“You know ‘lot of people say that city looks like hell.” A few more words she uttered, taking a long drag from her cigarette. You could tell she was putting some effort into getting the smoke out. The tip was glowing bright enough to leave a burned hole in the darkness. Brent stubbed out his cigarette on the window sill, and placed both hands upon it, as if they were stabilizing him.
“Most people wouldn't know what hell is like.” There were tremors in his voice. He was remembering. Gem scoffed.
“And I suppose you have.” There was a sense of sarcasm in her voice. Brent just let it slide. She looked at him with a worrying glare, even though he was not hers to worry about anymore. She licked her fingers and fizzled out the cigarette.
“Coming back to bed?” She asked, looking up to him. He turned to look at her, only to find her naked body spread across the bed. He showed emotion for the first time in 5 minutes. I walked over and climbing into bed with her. Before anything could happen, he held her head softly and rested it against his, with slight care.
“You shouldn't play games with me. Anyone else in the city would be happy to. I like to think of myself as the one honest man in the damn city. You should think so too, after all, we used to be together.”
Brent nuzzled into the nape of her neck, after having calmed down. Gem just stared at the ceiling with worry as he did what he does best. She began to think she may had gone wrong somewhere.
